It is not unusual to experience mild to moderate pain after dental procedures. Our recommendations for pain control after treatment are as follows:

01.Mild Pain

(Examples: simple extractions, routine root canal treatment, fillings, crowns, and deep cleaning)

  • Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) 400mg – 600mg plus Acetaminophen (Tylenol) 325 – 500mg taken at the same time around the clock every 4 – 6 hours for the first 24 hours, then Ibuprofen 400mg as needed for pain every 4 – 6 hours.
  • If you cannot take Ibuprofen then Acetaminophen 300mg plus Hydrocodone 5 – 10mg every 6 hours for 24 hours then Acetaminophen 650 mg to 1000mg as needed for pain every 6 hours.

02.Moderate Pain

(Examples: Implant surgery, surgical extractions, periodontal surgery, surgical root canal treatment)

  • Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) 400mg – 600mg plus Acetaminophen (Tylenol) 325 – 500mg taken at the same time around the clock every 4 – 6 hours for the first 24 hours, then Ibuprofen 400mg as needed for pain every 4 – 6 hours.
  • If you cannot take Ibuprofen then Acetaminophen 300mg plus Hydrocodone 5 – 10mg every 6 hours for 24 hours then Acetaminophen 650 mg to 1000mg as needed for pain every 6 hours.

03.Severe Pain

(more complex surgical procedures of root canal treatments)

  • Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) 400mg – 600mg plus Acetaminophen 650mg with hydrocodone 5 – 10mg around the clock every 6 hours for 48 hours. Then Ibuprofen 400mg as needed for pain every 4 – 6 hours after the first 48 hours.
  • If you cannot take ibuprofen then Acetaminophen 300mg plus oxycodone 10mg around the clock every 6 hours for 48 hours, then Acetaminophen 650mg – 1000mg as needed for pain every 6 hours.

04.additional information

Acetaminophen is the leading cause of acute liver failure in the U. S. today. Daily Ibuprofen dosages should not exceed 2400mg per day. Daily Acetaminophen dosages should not exceed 4000mg.
